Once again Troop 13 puts on the “REDS” and prepare to march in the St. Paul Winter Carnival’s 126th Grand Day Parade.  This year 30 hearty folks stepped up to say, “Yes I will do it, I will be a Gnome for a Day”.  Troop 13 has provided the leg power for the Gnomes for the past 64 year and have never missed a parade. The Winter Carnival parade billed as the Oldest and Coldest in the Nation. In 1886, Saint Paul was America’s fastest growing city. Growing from 39,000 residents in 1880 to 120,000 residents in 1886, Saint Paul had also become America’s third largest rail center. To celebrate their city’s success, Saint Paul business leaders produced the inaugural Saint Paul Winter Carnival, which was held during the first two weeks of February in 1886.

In addition to showcasing Saint Paul, the business leaders wanted to disprove a New York newspaper reporter who had described their beloved city as “another Siberia, unfit for human habitation in the winter.” Patterned after Montreal’s Winter Carnival, the first Saint Paul Winter Carnival included parades, sking, snow shoeing, a blanket tossing contest, and push ball, a game played with giant balls. The most successful attractions were its ice castle and six large toboggan slides.

Throughout its 125-year history, the Saint Paul Winter Carnival has been an integral part of the social fabric of Saint Paul. Carnival reaches out to the people of the Greater Saint Paul area to weave a tapestry of cultures with educational and cultural programming.

Father-Son Winter Campout

When we started out for this “winter campout” the weather was way to mild to call winter.  But with the great planning the Troop has, it turned cold and snowed, are we good or what.  Eleven scouts ten adults took part this year, Jan 13 – 15.  Saturday morning two Asst Scoutmasters, James and Jeff lead a long hike that included rock climbing.  After the hike everyone ate a big lunch.  After lunch was the annual father son Snow Bowl.  Not sure who won or even if they were keeping score.  Supper was the last of the 2011 Spaghetti Dinner Meatballs. December Campout 2011

Eight Scouts and 5 Adult leader headed out on Friday, Dec 2nd for the Troop’s annual “Winter Campout” however this year where was not snow so we did not pack skies, sleds etc.  We should have went with the Be Prepared motto,  because  on Saturday midday the snow started to fall.  Looking out the window it was like a post card,  2-5” of soft fluffy snow fell.  The Troop did take a long hike down toward the lake and skipped rocks across the fresh thin ice.  The snow was falling so fast they looked like they had been out in a rainstorm they were so wet. So this did turn out to be a Winter Campout!!  We completed a service project and worked on a Citizenship in the Community merit badge.  About that Be Prepared thing, we forgot a camera also.

Food Drive 2011

It was time for Troop 13’s Annual Food Drive to support the food shelves at the Franciscan Brothers of Peace. As in the past we had a great turn out of Boy Scouts from the Troop and Cub Scouts from Pack 70 and local girls scouts as well as parents and adult leaders.  We were able to collect over an estimated 1800# of food.  Prior to the collection the Boy Scouts distributed flyers door to door in the neighborhood and passed out food bags at the Church of St. Columba.  After door to door collecting the scouts helped sort the donations.
